After the colony survived the Galveston Storm of with no loss of life, they used their sawmill to convert the swaths of trees felled by the storm into lumber for the construction of a two story building they called the Academy.

It served them as church, school and community meeting place until it was replaced by the present stone church building in The Academy high school operated by the Quakers offered a classical curriculum through , and in its early years attracted students from surrounding towns without high schools. From to , most of the newcomers were Quakers who came to be a part of the Quaker colony. Through , the population was swollen by an influx of farmers, lured by Houston developers who advertised the Gulf Coast as a Garden of Eden where figs, oranges and rice grew practically wild.

By the early s, there were 17, to 18, acres of figs from Winnie to San Leon, and 17 fig-preserving plants. Two of those plants were in Friendswood. The population in Friendswood was just fewer than 1, by the beginning of the '60s, finally incorporating in This boom in population finally brought essential things like a mayor, city council, and police officers to Friendswood.

Nearby Pearland and Alvin began growth explosions at the same time and with it came somewhat playful town rivalries which still exist to this day. Main traffic arteries like Highway 35, FM , FM , and FM keep Friendswood humming and also allow for residents to work elsewhere but create a life for themselves in the town.

Friendswood was an agricultural community originally. Some residents worked in dairying or raised poultry, but the principal agricultural staples were Satsuma oranges, strawberries, figs, and rice, and the Quakers operated several processing plants until costs grew prohibitive.

Oil was discovered in the area during the s, and the population subsequently increased; in Friendswood reported residents and seven businesses. In the s it had a population of seventy-five and two businesses. A new church was constructed at the community by Friendswood remained predominantly Quaker until , when a local Baptist church was organized.
