Why lilacs dont bloom

Lilac bushes prefer full sun. Transplant shock. You may just have to give your lilacs another year to get over this. Sometimes a late freeze can knock the flowers or the start of the flowers right off the bush. If your lilac bush is not blooming, you might want to think back and think about whether or not there was a late freeze.

If this is why your lilac bush is not blooming, your bush is fine. Next year, you should have a ton of blooms.

Shade: Excess shade is the most likely culprit when lilacs fail to bloom well. Lilacs bloom best in full sunlight, or at least a half-day of sun. Anything less will mean fewer flowers developing. Sometimes the shade creeps up over the years as nearby shade trees grow taller and fuller.

In many cases, the lilacs may have been planted in a poor location to begin with. Pruning: If you prune lilacs back drastically, it may take a number of years before they begin to bloom again. Too much nitrogen in the soil results in lush, green bushes, but hinders blooming.

Insufficient amount of sunlight. Lilac bushes prefer full sun. Without enough sunlight, the plant will not bloom. Transplant shock. If you transplanted your Lilac bush since the last blooming period, they sometimes will miss a year. They need time to recover. I was given several lilac suckers at least years ago. I get blooms at most, though it has grown into a huge bush. It is on the southwest side of the house, beside the garage, and gets plenty of sun.

I even tried bonemeal. This year it has put out several suckers. So disappointed! Do not prune any others at all and see if that helps. Or move it, sometimes location makes a huge difference.
